Union Flyer

This past weekend I was over in Bakewell visiting their Christmas Market which was just running over that weekend. When we headed up to the square behind the co-op where the food stalls were, well I will be honest I was not feeling too hopeful, that was until I picked up a Flyer from the Union Street Food pop-up stall. This was the first run out of a ‘Spanish and Italian inspired StreetFood’ venture by the guys behind the local Wyes Waters Tea Rooms.

Union Menu Options

The Union Menu chalkboard stood out like a shining beacon in amongst the sad burger and pie stalls. There were plenty of people stuffing their faces at the troughs of average, but when it came down to finding something more original in the square? well the Union Street Food stall won the competition easily.

Spanish Chicken

I had one of their Spanish Chicken filled ‘Boccas’ for £5. This was a lightly toasted pitta type wrap filled with a plentiful mound of chicken that had been grilled in the Spanish style. The chicken was coated with a blend of smoked paprika, oregano, cumin and lemon, the bed of the wrap was filled up with a very large handful of crunchy rocket which was a good accompaniment to the chicken adding a little texture to the bite and pepperiness to the taste. On the top I added a splash of their homemade balsamic vinegar mix, and a generous dollop of their lemon and garlic yoghurt dressing. It was a seriously good sandwich, not only was it filling, it was damned tasty, and it also felt almost healthy. The only thing I would have changed would have been to make sure that more of the chicken filled the bottom of the wrap so that you got a bite of chicken, rocket., and yoghurt with each bite.

Serrano Ham and PecorinoSundried Tomato and Mozzarella

On the table top counter they had made up acouple of  example bocca dishes, the first filled with Serrano Ham, Pecorino Cheese, Rocket leaves and homemade Italian style Tomato sauce, the second filled with Semi-dried Tomatoes, Buffalo Mozzarella, Rocket leaves and a fresh basil pesto. The pictures I took were just of the sample dishes and the lady on the counter assured me that the actual dishes would be filled with even more stuff.

Union Napkin

This was a good first outing for the Union Crew and I hope that we get to see more of them in the coming months as they definitely have plenty to offer. Just one thing, I think it is fair to replace that question mark on the serviette, there is no question for me, it was well worth trying
