Sunday Lunch at the Globe Inn in Wells Next the Sea

The Globe Inn at Wells next the Sea located up the hill by the Georgian Square is a pretty popular spot in town, full of diners and dog owners all vying for attention, tables and floor space, it was hard to tell who were the main customers as both seemed equally welcome.

Their website says that “Food takes Centre Stage” and “We consider ourselves to be very lucky to have such incredible provenance on the doorstep, and our chefs take great delight in producing locally sourced meals, that embrace the regions nautical heritage.”

“Our menu explores regional British fare from land and sea, all with a global touch. Simple but tasty dishes, providing colonial riffs on popular classics.”

We were looking for a Sunday Lunch or Dinner in the area and this place seemed as good as anywhere (and we could get a table)

SUNDAY MENU

The whole menu reads a bit posher and fancier than my usual haunts but maybe that is not a bad thing I can’t always be dining and blogging about my local pubs and greasy spoon cafes.

The menu was priced at 2 courses for £28 and 3 courses for £34 but to be honest we only really wanted the roast so were asking for the price just for one course. This seemed to be beyond our server who struggled to fathom why we would only want one course so we gave up and decided to have a starter and have 2 courses

We both ordered the 28-Day Dry Aged Hereford Beef Rump and then took our chances with the starters picking ones that we thought might go and that we might like

OLD SPOT PORK BELLY RILLETTE

The Old Spot Pork Belly Rillette with Roasted Apple Puree & Toasted Sourdough looked good on the plate but was this going to be a case of style over substance

Thoughts at the time were that the ‘rillette was tasty, sourdough more like a cracker. Needed more proper toast’

The toast was the biggest issue, there wasn’t really enough bread or toast or cracker for the meat spread. It was also quite hard so really you ended up eating both seperately, a bite of the cracker followed by a spoonful of the meat.

I suppose that what happens when you ‘posh it up’ or maybe we are just heathens lol 🤣

CROMER CRAB CRUMPET

The Cromer Crab Crumpet with Lime Mayo and Pickled Cucumber was my choice and I did enjoy eating it

My thoughts at the time were ‘Lots of crab, really nice balance with the sweet pickle and the tart sharp lime in the Mayo. Downside crumpet was not crisp enough because the crab on top is wet

I really did like that combination of the pickle and the lime although thinking back I am not sure that it didn’t overpower the crab meat.

I would have like a more toasted crumpet and like the other starter more bread to crab ratio. This could have been really great with a couple of tweaks but it was still good enough for me.

I would probably order it again.

ROAST BEEF

The 28-Day Dry Aged Hereford Beef Rump came served with Yorkshire Pudding, Roast Potatoes, Glazed Carrots, Seasonal Vegetable & Gravy

At the time my thoughts were ‘Massive Yorkshire, lots of meat, needed more gravy (which we got). carrot great wanted another, peas are not seasonal but happy to have cabbage for once. Enjoyed the creamy parsnip smear’

Decent Sunday Dinner, bit fussy for my liking but I do like my food served piled high so was happy with the portions on the main.’

I do wonder why places insist on just piling everything on top of each other to serve it. They must know that to actually eat it we all just have to disasemble the stack to find the food

Once I had done that it was a much more normal and palatable looking plate. There was plenty of beef, three slices I think and that is better than many places that just give you one thick slice.

The Yorkshire was good, perhaps a bit cold and seemed to have been sitting around for a while. Once we got another pot of gravy it was all fine as we doused it and the rest of the meal to sort it all out

It was a good solid effort for a Sunday dinner and did the job of filling us up. Was it amazing? not really but decent pub food not restaurant food. Having said that the place was rammed and they were busy so maybe it was just a rush behind the scenes.

We came back to the pub most nights on our trip and really enjoyed our beers and the ambience once we worked out we needed to get there in decent time for a table.

I liked having all the dogs around although I don’t think everyone else did, they do advertise themselves as fully dog friendly and it was once of only a few places I have seen where you can take your dog into the dining room.

None of them came begging for any of my dinner so fair enough they were probably better behaved than some of us humans 🤣😎

All in all a nice place to visit, maybe the style of food is not quite to my tastes but they were popular and busy so must be doing something right to keep the punters happy
