Sausages and Beer at Bierschenke by Covent Garden

Biershenke Bierkeller in Covent Garden is, as you may well have expected from the name, a beer hall selling German Beers mostly it seems from the Paulaner brewery in Munchen.

We found ourselves here purely by chance as we were wandering around looking for somewhere to get a drink. I am not normally one for getting ‘dragged in off the streets’ by the people hanging around the doors, but we were tired and the ‘man with the menu in his hand’ was actually a welcome sight as we were thirsty and needed a sit down.

I paraphrase the question I asked “Do you have seats, food and beer?” and the answer also “yes I do, we have cold beer and sausage”

We were in!

PAULANER WEISBIER

So lets get things started in order by grabbing a cold one, first up a ‘pint’ of the Paulaner Weisbeer. This is not my usual tipple as I tend to stick to the lighter weaker beers, just a couple of sips in and I could tell I was in uncharted territory with a much stronger flavour and alcholic hit.

Perhaps it was just the heat outside and the weariness that made this seem stronger that it really was after all it is only supposed to be 5.5%

Either way, sustenance was needed so I asked for the menu

SAUSAGE SECTION OF THE MENU

My spirits rose as I saw that they really did have a lot of sausage so I was actually feeling very happy, and it wasn’t just the strong beer that I was quaffing out of that rather large glass.

I do love a good sausage and while I have partaken several in Germany I cannot recall what they were. There is a rather good Austrian sausage restaurant near to me in Bakewell that I frequent and where I love the kaisekrainer (the one filled with cheese) and I was hoping to see similar here but sadly not

I had my eyes on the Currywurst as I have not, as a I recall, to my amazement had one before despite it’s obvious charms of sausage and curry sauce!

CURRYWURST WITH CHIPS

I had ordered The CURRY WURST which was a Krakauer sausage with our home-made curry ketchup & chips for £10.50. Apparently the Krakauer sausage is a slightly smokey, cured pork sausage with a coarser meat filling seasoned with garlic and mustard.

To be honest it was quite hard to pick out any of the spice flavours as it was covered with that sweet and slighty spicy curry sauce or Currygewürzketchup as they call it officially. I didn’t even know that this was a type of ketchup I was expecting some sort of sauce akin to chip shop curry sauce

I have to declare that I rather like this curried ketchup and I am going to have to start some sort of mission to hunt down a bottle or two. Of course based on the sprinkling of curry powder on top of my plate I suspect that I could just get some tomato ketchup and shake my own curry powder on top.

CURRYWURST AND NURNBERGERS WITH CHIPS

This was supposed to be my meal but my partner in dine had plans to ‘share’ it by ‘just having a couple of chips’. I could see how this was going to pan out so I decided to see off the invasion to my plate by ordering them a side of ‘additional 4 Nurnberger’ sausages for another £4

The Nurnberger sausages were surprising big, not as big as the main sausage but as big as some I get from the butcher, size wise they would make a good breakfast sausage.

Apparently they are a skinny pork bratwurst seasoned with majoram and have a smokey flavour. I quite liked them but I found it hard not to think that each bite was about 30p since they were basically a quid each 🤣🤣

I liked them as well but if I was dininig totally alone I would have just added another one of the big Krakauer sausages for £4.

The last comment is for the chips, a couple of people I shared the photo with suggested that they looked a bit sad and dried up. Honestly they were not they were a bit crunchy but there was plenty of soft pototo inside, and best of all they had a ‘groove’ in them so that you could scoop up the curry sauce more easily! 😍

Of course being a ‘beer hall’ I was unable to resist trying a couple more beers. This time though I went for a more traditional lager type instead of the wheat beer ordering one of the Paulaner Hell Lagers.

It was only a little less alcholic at 4.9% but it was much easier to drink for me than the first beer as it wasn’t full of fruity flavours, instead it was a more hoppy and malty beer and much more familiar tasting for my palate.

We were here in the evening and were a little sad to find that we could not get the early diner deal where you could get a beer and a snack for £10. That would have made my meal much more of a bargain and it’s worth noting for any future visits to come in a little bit earlier or at lunchtime
