Sunday Lunch at Ye Olde Jolly Sailor in Teignmouth

According to the sign above the door Ye Olde Jolly Sailor on Northumberland Place by the harbour is the oldest pub in Teignmouth. On their website where they tell us that there has been an ‘ale house on the site since 1132 when it was called ‘The Ferryboat’ being located at the spot where the ferry from Shaldon used to land.

Today we had just arrived in town looking for Sunday Lunch and this was our third port of call hoping to be lucky. We were fortunate to get the last table, or rather we were allowed to occupy a reserved table on the promise that we would vacate it in an hour when the guests turned up

As always when offered such an opportunity I will say if you can can give me my food and enough in time for me to eat it then no problem!

Deal struck we took up our positions and perused the menu 🤣

ROAST MENU

We were here looking for Roast Dinner situation, happily we found one and although we had planned this hunt for a Sunday we need not have left it for just this day as it seems that they offer one up on Friday and Saturday as well!

The Menu offered a choice of ‘Beef, Turkey, or Honey Glazed Gammon‘ with ”Potatoes, carrots, and Yorkshire pudding‘ for £12.95 or a mixture of all three meats in a King Sized Roast with extra yorkie and veg for £17.95.

We were hungry but not ravenous so we played it in a restrained manner ordering two Adult Roast Beef dinners and of course a couple of pints to wash it down!

ROAST BEEF, YORKSHIRE PUDDING AND ROAST POTATOES

The plate arrived as it often does with your serving of Roast Meats, Beef in our case, Yorkshire Pudding and Roast Potatoes. I suppose some people might just want to eat that, restricting themselves to just one of their 5 a day.

It was a bit dimly lit so hard to get a good photograph but hopefully you can see that you get a big crispy Yorkie, plenty of roast spuds and a few slices of quite well cooked beef

Personally I like my beef pinker, but as long as it tastes good and is tender to the bite I take what I can get when in a busy pub

The vegetables came in a side dish, a portion of green french beans, the less loved red cabbage, and what looked like mash potato but turned out to be a mixed root veg mash (carrots and swedes we guessed)

Happily the dish also contained a rather large portion of cauliflower cheese, topped off somewhat randomly with a sprinkling of paprika. It does sound a bit strange but it was actually quite a good and tasty idea and I liked it a lot.

Overall it was a decent plateful, lots of well cooked vegetables, cheapish, cheerful, and most importantly filling. There was plenty of beef and plenty of sides, ok so the beef could have been pinker but you get what you get some days, happily it was tasty and along with a good dollop of thick meaty gravy I didn’t find anything to grumble about

I must have been in a good mood as I even enjoyed my pint of Doom Bar Bitter, one of my least favoured beers. It was very cold and wet outside so really I think I was just grateful to be inside in the warm and any assistance to cheer up my soul in the form of liquid refreshment was always going to be welcome

Ye Olde Jolly Sailor is a proper old fashioned pub, inside the rooms allow for groups to hide themselves away in various nooks, crannies, and corners as well as providing some big open spaces where you can mass and be sociable

It is a bit dimly lit in places, but that is part of the charm of the place and I prefer that than some sterile soulless spot with no character

Ye Olde Jolly Sailor is located at 46 Northumberland Place, Teignmouth, TQ14 8DE right next to the waterside by the river ebbing and flowing away.
