Breakfast at Chandlers in Paignton

Today we took a train from Teignmouth to Paignton to check out the resort and get some seas air.

To be honest this was not the best day to choose as it was raining and the skies were very grey.

As we in trundled along the main road leading to the seafront looking for somewhere to get breakfast we found a rather nice cafe called Chandlers

I confess that I had my eyes on some of the greasy spoons a little further up the street but to be fair this place looked a lot brighter and cosier.

Although I do like to slum it in places where I can consume bacon fat in the air I did concede that Chandlers was going to be a far lovelier spot to dine at

BREAKFAST MENU AT CHANDLERS

The menu offers a Small, Regular, and Large Breakfast putting a pink rectangular box around the regular one presumably to give you a nudge to pick that option

It sounded good on paper as for £7.25 you get ‘bacon, local sausage, black pudding, your choice of free range egg (fried, poached or scrambled), hash brown, baked beans, grilled tomato, grilled flat mushroom, white or granary toast & butter)

But once I calculated the price differential between the Regular and the Large it was a no brainer as for just another £1.30 you get an extra sausage, slice of bacon, hash brown and an egg! So I picked the Large 😎

My supplementary question to the breakfast gods was could I just have got those 4 items for that price because that would be a real bargain!

I didn’t ask 😋

LARGE BREAKFAST

The Large breakfast was quite filling and you could tell that the ingredients on the plate were all of good quality.

The highlights were the two locally made sausages which were properly meaty and well flavoured. It helped that they had been cooked really well as they had a nice crisped up skin.

Secretly I do prefer less fancy sausages with my cafe breakfasts but I wasn’t going to turn my nose up at a couple of quality bangers like these! 😋🤣

I also enjoyed getting crispy rashers of bacon with all the fat rendered. It tasted really good, a little salty and gently smoked for a change.

The accompanying slice of black pudding had a smooth creamy texture and was a little crisp and crumbly on the edges just as a I like

The two fried eggs were ok, perhaps a little too long in the pan as the yolk was set a little more than I usually like.

The hash browns are never my favorite thing on a Full English and being slightly harsh these two were a bit too soft.

The field mushroom was big and juicy which pleased me, the baked beans were also better than many places cooked in a pan so that the juices are still thick and not all watery.

I wasn’t keen on the half tomato but is it wrong to complain that it was too big especially when some cafes just give you a spoonful out of a tin?

You see I really did want to go to that greasy spoon lol

Having gently grumbled about some elements of my plate (if I am totally honest) there was not really anything to complain about. The quality of the ingredients was a lot higher than I had expected and the price extremely reasonable.

Yes I wanted a down and dirty greasy spoon breakfast from the cafe up the road but I my body was probably more grateful and happier scoffing down this superior effort from Chandlers Cafe!

Chandlers Cafe and Coffee shop is located at 22A Torbay Rd in Paignton TQ4 6AF. I usually pay no attention to Tripadvisor but when I was looking online for the address I saw that Chandlers was listed as ‘1 of 48 Quick Bites in Paignton’ so they must be doing something right 😎

You can check the cafe out through their Facebook Page
