Breakfast at Urban Larder in Cambridge

Urban Larder in Cambridge is well known for its Grilled Cheese Sandwiches or ‘Toasties’ to us normal folk but were were not here for one of those today. We were in the market for some sort of breakfast situation, personally I was looking for some sort of fry up but we were being a bit posher in our choice of venue so we were grabbing ourselves a couple of breakfast sandwiches.

Just to keep things simple we opted for one sausage and egg, and one bacon and egg, alongside a tea and a coffee as one does in this sort of establishment

SAUSAGE AND EGG

The sausage and the egg sandwich was for myself and most pleasingly came filled with some rather excellent looking bangers. A couple of well cooked meaty looking sausages sliced in half lay on top of the lower bun. I could see herby bits and I could see crispy bits, I was feeling pretty happy about that.

On top of my meat I had a fried egg, one of those cooked in a ring as opposed to one allowed to flow across the pan. Ok so yeh it helped it fit better inside the bun, but the yolk was a bit overdone so it wasn’t as runny as I had hoped. I do love a dribble of egg out of my breakfast butty, free sauce I say.

EGG AND BACON

The egg and bacon sandwich came with two eggs for some reason, perhaps it was supposed to have done, but as it wasn’t mine I was a little bit jealous.

The well cooked, crispy bacon with some nice fat rendered out lay also on the bottom bun. It was a bit more hidden though this time as it had all of that egg in it.

Once all photos were taken we happily swapped a bit of bacon and a bit of sausage to punk up our own sandwiches. It has to be done by law and if you are not willing to swap well you are not allowed to eat with me first thing in the morning when I may be a little grumpy

I liked my sandwich for the quality of the sausage and the bacon, both of which I hear are sourced from the Mill Road Butchers just along the way.

I really wanted a runny egg and I did find that the bread was just a bit too fancy for the job. Having said that this place is also a lot fancier that a classic cob shop or greasy spoon cafe so I figure I have to live with the situation.

Lets be fair, it is a nice spot, good quality food and drinks, and fitted in well to how I thought Cambridge cafe life was going to be

Urban Larder can be found at No 9 The Broadway just along from Mill Road. There is a lot of food action in the area and plenty of choices. This place seems to have an excellent reputation so was a good choice and is recommended.
