The Mounts Bay Pasty Company is a lovely cafe situated on Market Jew Street just up from the harbour. We visited twice on this trip to Penzance so that tells you all you need to know even before I talk about what we ate
The people running it were friendly, it was busy full of regulars and everyone seemed to know everyone else. I suspect we were frowned down on by the odd person for stealing their daily dining spot, I know I would do so if it was my joint lol
Mount Bay wasn’t at all fancy, utilitarian might be harsh, no frills a much kindest description. Despite that I succumbed to it’s obvious charm which was a menu laden with classic greasy spoon breakfast options
MOUNT BAY PAST COMPANY MENU

The options were for Small, Large, and Extra Large. On the first visit I stuck in the middle instead of choosing the breakfast to match my burgeoning waist line. On the second visit I opted for a small breakfast as we were on our way out of town, I would be driving and didn’t want to get all post fry-up sleepy
LARGE BREAKFAST

For £8.75 I was treated to a plate filled with “2 Bacon, 2 Sausage, 2 eggs, 2 hash brown, 2 toast, mushrooms, and beans”
Alternatively my partner in dine had a more simple plate of Bacon (x3) and Eggs (x2) for just £6.15. I let them have some of my toast, a bit of sausage and a hash brown 😎
Very decent breakfast, sausage was excellent, a proper butcher effort. Bacon was cheap but crisped well. Eggs cooked properly although yolks a little pale, generous portion of mushrooms, well prepared beans both standard plate fillers as expected.
Hash browns cheap but crispy, toast a little pale but as used for plate moppage was perfectly acceptable for the job in hand
SMALL BREAKFAST

On the second visit I went for the SMALL breakfast which was basically the same only with one less of the key items of Sausage, Bacon, Hash Brown and Egg.
This time after a lengthy conversation on the merits of said item I picked tomatoes over beans. I was happy find that I could have tinned plum, tinned, or grille tomato. I asked for grilled, the only ones I really like, with my breakfast
I don’t really have much else to add about this breakfast that I didn’t say about the LARGE one. The tomatoes were great, cooked all the way through, sweet and juicy. I did miss the beans though I needed more sauciness on my plate.
BREAKFAST BAP

On the second visit my dining companion opted for one of their Breakfast Baps for £5.45 which was substantial in itself filled out with sausage, bacon and fried egg. It had been buttered to death and the egg looked a little ragged around the edges but it did taste nice and had everything you want from breakfast in a bap!

I really enjoyed our visits to Mounts Bay Cafe and I would definitely would come here again. It was certainly cheap enough, very friendly and popular amongst the locals which is always a good sign
The Mounts Bay Cafe and Pasty Shop is located at 8 Market Jew street, Penzance, TR18 2HN
Footnote about the Pasty Element of the shop

We had originally popped in looking for a Cornish Pasty (but then got distracted by breakfast) when we enquired if they made the pastie themselves it turned out that they didn’t which I though was a shame given the name of the place

The pasties are bought in from a supplier and then baked on the premises. I am guessing from the board outside that they are Prima Pasties which to be fair are a very decent pasty. Just not a locally made one which I was hoping for😢
