Breakfast today was at Whistle Stop Cafe in Teignmouth Station which is an absolute classic seemingly untouched for decades.
It looks like it has been here forever, and it feels like it, it has all the charms of a old fashioned British cafe along with a warm welcome from the ladies behind the counter
If I hadn’t known that this was attached to an active network station on the Great Western line, I might have though I had walked into a vintage rail museum complete with the original cafe

I loved the naming of the different breakfast options on the menu, Standard Fare, Hunger Buster, Whistlestop Whopper, Between Stations, and for the little ones you can have the Railway Children’s Breakfast
I suppose they could have called them ‘small’, ‘medium’, ‘large’, ‘brunch’, and ‘kids’, but where would the fun have been in that? 🧐🤣
People often say that their ‘eyes are bigger than their belly’ which is a stretch in reality even though in my case I really know it means ordering more food than I can eat (comfortably)
It so came to pass that I declined the opportunity to scoff one of their Whistlestop Whoppers which is a plate filled with “3 sausages, 3 bacon, 2 eggs, beans, tomatoes, hash brown, mushrooms, fried bread (or toast), black pudding and a cup of tea or coffee“
Instead we picked one of the smaller options but honestly? I think I could have taken it on!
TWO STANDARD FARES PLEASE

We both had the “STANDARD FARE” breakfast (see what they did there 🤣) for £6.60 which was made up of ‘2 bacon, sausage, egg, hash brown, beans or tomatoes, toast or fried bread AND a mug of tea’
I opted for fried bread and beans, lard for the arteries and fibre to clear it out. It is a rare treat to get fried bread with your breakfast these days so I wasn’t passing up the chance to get a slice or two!
As you can see this was a total bean fest with practically a whole tin each. You might be forgiven thinking it was a plate of beans with added extras 🤣🤣
STANDARD FARE BREAKFAST

Ok so quality wise this was mixed, sure the baked beans were great, the hash brown was crispy which is a bonus as sometimes I find them a bit mushy and soggy.
The sausages were admittedly verging on a certain level of dubiousness but I have to say that despite their ‘cheapness’ they were still quite meaty and had been well cooked.
The bacon was nice and crisp and probably one of the stars on the plate. It would have made an excellent bacon cob.
I wasn’t sure about the egg, ok so the yolk was still runny but not sure how it was cooked? possibly in a pool of oil?
The star of the show was the fat laden fried bread which I enjoyed immensely and I could have happily munched my way through a couple more slices.
All in all a decent feed for the price, £6.60 with the option of toast/fried slice and a mug of tea? that is a bit of a bargain these days and if this had been a modern railway coffee shop or kiosk you would have struggled to get a muffin and a mug for that amount!
PUDDINGS ON THE COUNTER

In summary the Whistle Stop Cafe is a top notch old school cafe, the bikers come here to meet up and the lady behind the counter totally bosses the place. Don’t mess around asking for owt fancy here 🤣
Best of all she bakes cakes and puddings fresh each day. We had a portion of crumble and custard to take away for tea and it was lovely, proper stuff 🥰
I can’t wait to be back in Teignmouth, if only to change trains to somewhere, just so I can have another breakfast. Next time perhaps that mammoth Whistle Stop Whopper!
