The Wren & Raven up at the top of Market Street is a great addition to the cafe scene in Penzance. Self styled on their site as being ‘An independent coffee roastery, artisan bakery, art gallery, and music venue based in Penzance, rooted in creativity and community‘ it was certainly a quite bustling spot when we visited for lunch

It is a huge space, featuring long communal tables all down the centre of the room, and suprisingly these were popular with the punters with everyone seemingly happy to share the spaces

SMOKED MACKEREL KEDGEREE

I had only really come in for cake and coffee but once I had perused the menu I could not resist the offer of a plate of Kedgeree.

Officially this was listed as THE RAVEN – Smoked Mackerel Kedgeree, Rice, Peas, Poached Egg, Chili Oil for £12. I don’t know why it’s called the Raven but that’s incidental now I guess 🤔🤣

In summary it was a quite delightful plate of food. Well cooked rice, plenty of bits of smoked mackerel, crunch bits and a big hit of heat from the chilli oil. A perfectly poached egg load across the top oozing out creamy yolk as you cut it and made it more decadent when mixed with the rice

COFFEE OF COURSE

As it was a coffee shop I felt obliged to order one and I ended up with a fairly decent Latte with quite a bit of coffee strength )if that makes sense) I do usually like mine quite milky as I am a tea drinker mostly but I actually enjoyed the extra hit for once

CAKE FIX

As I said up top we originally only popped in for a hot drink and a bit of cake, so even though I had just scoffed a big plate or Kedgeree, I still felt in need of a cake fix

So we ordered a slice of their Millionaires Shortbread which was rather good. It was very rich, and also quite sweet too! A good thick layer of chocolate and a good crunch biscuit base as well

All the cakes looked good and I would happily while a way a little time here sampling a slice or two

As we sat sipping the remain of the coffee I found myself Loving this newish cafe in Penzance. Much bigger than it looks from the outside, very airy, lots of artwork, good vibes and the biggest communal table I’ve seen for ages 😎
