Mackerel Sky Seafood Bar in Newlyn

You can’t come to Newlyn without making at least one visit to the excellent Mackerel Sky Seafood bar (or in our case twice!)

Located on Newlyn Road, the Bar is twinned up with the Mackerel Sky Seafood Shack where we ate last year (read more here).

Two spots a mere 50 yards apart, Two Kitchen’s, but the same menu, the same chefs and the same fabulous front of house team

Today we were sampling some old favourites that we enjoyed so much last year, and a couple of new dishes that caught our eyes off the menu.

Yes we were pushing the boat out a little bit but who cares we are on our holidays

SCALLOPS, HAZELNUT DUKKAH, and HOGS PUDDING

First up was one of my favourite dishes that they do here the SCALLOPS, HAZELNUT DUKKAH, and HOGS PUDDING for £13.95.

I had been thinking about this dish all year and could not wait to try it again.

A plate of perfectly seared soft fresh scallops, combined with slices of crisp porky Hogs Pudding (a local Cornish speciality) and a drizzle of nutty hazelnut Dukkah.

I was not to be disappointed, as it is a match made in heaven, and honestly I don’t think that I will ever visit the Bar and not order this dish!

I will never tire of its charms and delightfulness

MACKEREL with BEETROOT AND HORSERADISH

Next up was the MACKEREL with BEETROOT AND HORSERADISH, another dish well remembered from last summer and looked forward to with equal anticipation.

A pair of neatly Butterflied Mackerel fillets grilled with a crispy skin and topped with finely sliced strips of beetroot and a creamy horseradish sauce for £9.95.

It is a crowd pleaser for sure and a lovely blend of earthy flavour with a bit of gentle heat and creaminess

GRILLED NEWLYN HAKE, SAMPHIRE, CAPERS

Next up was a new dish for me here at Mackerel Sky Bar sampling the GRILLED NEWLYN HAKE with SAMPHIRE and CAPERS for £11.95.

It sounds simple enough and it sort of is. Essentially a big chunky thick slice of Hake covered with a pile of samphire and a scattering of capers all in a buttery sauce.

I loved the meaty bite of the Hake and the sharpness of the caper within that sauce, there was a lot of Samphire but to be honest we all do need a decent portion of greens in our lives now and again.

This was a well thought out dish and just went to show that Good food need not be complicated

CAJUN FISH LOADED FRIES, SOUR CREAM, JALAPEÑOS

Last but not least was a bowl of CAJUN FISH LOADED FRIES, SOUR CREAM, JALAPEÑOS for £12.95.

This is pretty much what it says on this tin, chunks of white fish mixed in a gentle Cajun seasoning scattered across a pile of thinly cut crispy French fries.

The slices of soft chilli peppers that are mixed in and about the pile of fries do catch you out on occasion with a sweet but hot bite of chilli.

Happily (for my palate) the dollops of sour cream step in to save the day as the cooling element.

As always some great dishes and bites of food. I would like to eat the whole menu but probably not possible in one sitting which it why we returned a few days later to partake again

This last trip to the Mackerel Sky Bar we agreed to just pick the dishes that we really wanted, and then one to share.

So with no further ado, let us get on it!

Scallops with Hazelnut Dukkah and Hogs Pudding (AGAIN)

No surprise I needed another plate of my everlasting favourite again the Scallops with Hazelnut Dukkah and Hogs Pudding.

There seemed to be even more sausage and scallop today or maybe I was closer on the table to my prey and wasn’t sharing as much

My partner in Dine wanted the mussels and we both fancied the Lemon Sole so lets have a look at those

CRISPY LEMON SOLE, KATSU CURRY SAUCE

First up an old favourite from last year which was the CRISPY LEMON SOLE, KATSU CURRY SAUCE for £10.75.

Part of me feels that this is a very safe dish to order as it’s just a crispy fillet of fish with a very familiar curry sauce, but seriously this is a notch above what you might expect.

The sauce is deeper and richer than the norm, sweet pickled vegetables and chopped up scallions alongside the perfectly crisped up fish is somewhat joyous for your tastebuds

It looks pretty on the plate and is a good dish to share as there is nothing to be scared of here

MUSSELS with WHITE WINE, CREAM, LEEKS and BACON

Next up were the MUSSELS off the specials board with WHITE WINE, CREAM, LEEKS and BACON for £15.

This is a bit of a classic, a well flavoured broth with slices of bacon and leek plus a great big pile of juicy plump freshly picked mussels.

I do love getting my hands into the bowl, scooping out each mussel and licking the juices off my fingers.

You do need to get a spoon in there too so that you don’t miss out on the bits of bacon and leek plus a good drink of the lovely broth

Another simple yet great dish, next time we are having a bowl each!

I really do love visiting Penzance and Newlyn and one of the main reasons is eating here at the Mackerel Sky Seafood Bar and over at the Shack alongside.

I am not often one to get too set in my ways but it does look like they will need to get a bigger table for next year as I have my eyes on another trip and my belly on some more tasty food!
