Rockfish in Plymouth is one of the Seafood Restaurants owned by Mitch Tonk located around the Southeast. He has other spots all over the SouthWest (Brixham, Dartmouth, Exeter, Exmouth, Torquay, Poole and Weymouth).

It is located at Sutton Harbour next to the National Marine Aquarium, but don’t worry I think that the supply of fish comes from the nearby Plymouth Fish Market and from Brixham Fish Market 🙂

We meant to come here last year when we visited the Barbican in Plymouth but the footbridge that leads across the harbour to Rockfish was under repair that day so we missed out eating instead at the excellent Harbourside Fish and Chips (so we didn’t miss out that much Fish and Chips wise 🙂 )

There were plenty of really good Fresh fish options here at Rockfish but today we were keeping it traditional having the Classic option of Fish and Chips (with Mushy peas of course). Decisions had to be made between Haddock and Cod and that was about all that we needed to think about. It had been a long day and we were just hungry so nothing too fancy was going to be happening here today 🙂

We went for the Cod purely on the spur of the moment. I don’t usually have Cod, I am normally a Haddock man by habit, but today I just fancied something else.

It was actually a really nice piece of fish and very well cooked. I do really like Haddock and will stick with that but at least I am back on the Cod wagon now. I had a phase of eating Pollock when it was the replacement for Cod but I never really liked that as much

Anyway what about this bit of Fried Cod at Rockfish I hear you ask. The batter was really crisp and crunchy but still thin enough so that it didn’t get in the way of the fish. The cod was pretty decent, solid thick flesh and still a bit wet inside that golden baked coating.

It was a good sized portion, not over hanging the plate large but big enough to fill us both up. It was plenty big enough is what I am saying 🙂

The chips were not really my idea of chip shop chips but they were not french fries either, something in between the two but yet still something that I did really like.

I was thinking they were kind of twice fried style and as they were unlimited I was glad that I liked them as that way if I did want more I was eating out of enjoyment not just gluttony 🙂

The mushy peas were green and abundant, moist and fresh, they did the job that was asked of them and that was all that was needed

Rockfish Plymouth were offering plenty of dishes with locally caught fish and our waitress very patiently talked through the daily specials or catches of the day that we could have chosen. To be fair they all did sound good and part of me did think that we should have chosen one of those instead of the traditional offering of Fish and Chips. To be honest though I am a simple man of simple pleasures and was happy enough with my lot today

If I am back down this way though or at one of the other Rockfish Seafood restaurants in the empire I think that I will try out one of the daily options, depending on what they have that day. I kind of fancied the Sardines.

Rockfish Plymouth is located at Sutton Harbour, 3 Rope Walk, Plymouth, PL4 0LB. It is right next to the National Marine Aquarium and you can see both from the other side of the harbour at the Barbican. A footbridge runs between the two and is open most of the time, just closing to let the big boats through into the harbour.
