Pucellis in Padstow: Good Italian Grub

Pucellis in Padstow is a really good spot for a bit of Italian grub at ‘reasonable’ prices. The menu is mostly pizza and pasta dishes but they also do a fair number of traditional Italian grills too.

Another bonus is that it is walk-ins only so if you haven’t managed or remembered to book a table anywhere then there is a fair chance to get one here (we always arrive when they open)

We came last year and checked out the Pizza (read more here) and that was a good enough experience to leave us wanting more so we trotted along just after they opened in the evening to grab another bite.

I was in the mood for some grilled meats Italian style so I ignored the entire section of pizza and pasta and dove straight towards the Secondo section which seemed to be the place to look.

There were a couple of steaks (Costata, Controfiletti) some burgers and some fish dishes (Spigola, Pesce, Cozze, Gameberi) on offer but what I really fancied was a bit of chicken so I picked the Fiorentina Di Pollo .

This was basically Chicken in a Creamy sauce but officially it is “Tender breast of chicken and seasonal greens sauteed and served in a rich garlic, white wine and parmesan cream sauce” and as I am a heathen I asked if I could have some chips with it as well 😋

FIORENTINA DI POLLO

The Chicken portion was generous and I really enjoyed the creamy garlic wine sauce. If I am being a bit picky it was a little over perhaps a moment too long on the grill or pan but I am not that fussy It was good enough though for me

The Seasonal greens turned out to be tenderstem broccoli, green beans, and some asparagus. I am not sure they were that seasonal here in Padstow but I like all of them so they were very welcome

There was a scattering of some sort of tendrils across the top of the chicken, I suspected it was pea tendrils but I wasn’t sure. It was a good extra bit of crunch whatever it was!

All in all a really well flavoured and seasoned dish, lovely sauce, plenty of meat and it went very well with the portion of thin crispy fries that I had chosen to add to the event

LASAGNE

My dining companion ordered the lasagne which they helpfully describe on the menu as “A generous serving of beef ragu sandwiched between layers of pasta and creamy white sauce, topped with Italian cheeses, then grilled until bubbling” (just in case you need to know what lasagna is 😇)

It came served with ‘garden leaves and garlic ciabatta’ which turned out to be a big salad including tomato, red onion and what looked like courgette strips (the jury is still out on that one)

The garlic ciabatta was more like garlic toast but to be fair it did it’s main job as a scoop for the lasagne sauce when needed so who cares what it looked like eh?

LASAGNE CLOSE UP

A close up on the Lasagne shows the awesome topping with the cheese and sauce that was well crispy in places, thick and creamy elsewhere, just as we like it

It was a huge dishful and back home we might well have been sharing this one, no-one was sharing it here though. The only thing on the table that was being split was the side order of fries and to be totally honest I ate most of those with my chicken (and erm a slice of the garlic bread too 😋)

Look now before we go any further I just have to say that the Lasagne is well worth getting here. I am not usually a fan of paying for pasta dishes or things I can cook at home but I say now that this topping on the Lasagne is way better than anything coming out of my kitchen so I happily pay Pucellis the £18 to feed me this one any day

Located at 9 South Quay in Padstow PL28 8BL you can find Pucellis upstairs above the Padstow Fish and Chips restaurant and just next door to Chough Bakery

You can check them out on their website and also on their Facebook page and Instagram profile

This was our second visit and we have found them to be a pretty reliable option for food around Padstow harbour Price wise it is not cheap but then again compared to other eateries in the area it is fair value. Both our mains were around £18 and with drinks the bill was around the £45 make for two people
