Mr Mackerel in Leeds Kirkgate Market are one of the traders serving up Turkish or more specifically Istanbul Street Food. They are a Char Grill House and as you pass by you get a lovely waft of meats grilling away that draws you in a bit closer for a look

The speciality of the house, as the name might imply, are their Fish Sandwiches essentially a whole mackerel fillet grilled in front of your eyes and wedged in between a sandwich roll with salad just just £5. They also do lamb and chicken if you are less adventurous

HALF CHICKEN AND CHIPS

While the Mackerel sandwich should be the default choice if you are dining here, today we had made a beeline to them to take advantage of another exceptionally good deal. If you are early enough you can snag a half chicken and chips for just £7 which is an absolute steal.

The best part is that it really is a half chicken on the bone, its huge as well packing out the box and over shadowing the chips and cucumber salad that lurk beneath the meat in the bottom of the tray

Lovely juicy chicken, nicely seasoned crispy skin with some decent char from the grill. Enough chips to fill you up and we also got a small rice and lentil soup which we used as a dip, but that was an extra bonus it wasn’t part of the deal

This was just a quick pitstop to the market on a day trip from York and really we just came for that Chicken deal. I really must come back for the Famous Fish sandwich! Next time no excuses 😎
