Sunny’s Cafe & Sandwich Bar on Fulford Road was an excellent place that we found to get breakfast while we were visiting York.
Before we came to town I had done my research and checked them out on their website liking the look of the menu and the tagline ‘Locally Sourced & Crafted with Love‘ that they had used to describe their food. That was enough to put them on the list of places we needed to go
The cafe itself is bright, warm and welcoming, inside there were plenty of seats and we were happy to find a big table by the window to sit at while we perused the menu and pondered our options
BREAKFAST MENU AT SUNNYS

The breakfast menu at Sunny’s has something for everyone, and something for all levels of appetite; Full Breakfast, Breakfast Cobs, and Stuff on Toast
I always have my eye on a fry-up so there was very little debate for my choice as I was looking at the Sunnys Breakfast of ‘2 Cumberland sausages, 2 bacon rashers, black pudding, hash brown, egg, tomato, beans, mushrooms, and toast‘ for £8.20
I did toy with the idea of the Potato and Chorizo breakfast hash which I saw someone having in a big bowl. In their own words “Chucked on the grill with some paprika, garlic, red peppers, red onions, couple of fried eggs on top with some parsley” Sounds tasty!, and looked rather good!
More sensible sized options were the Breakfast Buttys of Bacon or Sausage (plus any optional extra such as Black pud, hash brown, fried egg, beans, mushroom and tomato) although if you added all that lot it becomes less sensible 🤣
The lightest option was the Toast and Jam for £2.60 but I wouldn’t get out of bed for that on holiday🤣😎
SUNNYS BREAKFAST

As previously stated I had the job of scoffing down a SUNNYS BREAKFAST which to be honest was a lot more food than I was supposed to have ordered. The original brief had been to pop in for maybe a bacon cob and a cup of tea before getting the bus into town but I had ignored that using abject gluttony as my excuse.
So it came to pass that I was staring down a plate filled with a couple of Cumberland sausages, two rashers of bacon, a slice of black pudding, fried egg, grilled tomato, hash brown beans, mushrooms, and two slices of very well buttered toast. My stomach rumbled with joyous expectation 🤣
Taken as a whole this was all fabulous but individually there were highs and lows on the plate. To be honest I like it that way as well since it gives me something to talk about and ponder the merits of the meal with fellow likeminded (or more often not likeminded) breakfast loving people

The highlights on the plate were the meaty, herby, and quite solid Cumberland sausages, the slice of black pudding which is always a welcome addition especially when it comes with the meal and not as an extra, and those slices of buttered toast.
I was pleased with the cooking of my tomato, cooked all the way through and still juicy, the egg yolk was great as it was still runny, not sure what had happened to the white
I liked the meatiness and thickness of the bacon but perhaps the fat could have been rendered a little more. I don’t mind it being fatty but I do prefer it crispier.
The beans and mushrooms were essential and essentially plate fillers, the hash brown just needed a bit more time in the pan or oven to make it crunchier. I ate it as I do like my fill of potato, just being hyper critical for a change 😎
SAUSAGE AND EGG BUTTY

My fellow diner was being more sensible with their choice of food to break their fast sticking with the original brief by just ordering a breakfast butty. I could point out that they hadn’t just ordered sausage or bacon and that they too had lived it up a bit getting SAUSAGE and BACON and EGG in their Breakfast Butty, but I didn’t (at the time)
It did look good with two of those Cumberland sausages sliced lengthways placed in an orderly fashion upon two slices of bacon and topped off with a fried egg. All of it housed inside a big soft white cob or roll as they call it here
Excellent value as well only about £3.50 I can’t really recall exact amount but well worth the money
For the record we came back again the next day and had two more breakfast rolls and they were really very good indeed!

I really liked Sunny’s it was a lovely place for getting a breakfast. Nice friendly staff and seemed very popular with the locals. While we sat inside waiting there was a constant stream of people coming in and out for breakfast rolls and hot drinks.
I was very happy with my cooked breakfast and if we are back this way again (quite likely) I have my eyes on the Potato and Chorizo Breakfast Hash, perhaps as a mid morning brunch 😎😍
