This week while in Plymouth we headed over to The V.O.T (Victualling Office Tavern) on Cremyll Street near to Royal William Yard for some Tapas and Some Beers.
The tavern is a family run establishment and is located in the build that once housed the Victualling Office that was responsible for provisioning food and supplies for the Royal Navy in the yard
Refurbished and given a new lease of life back in 2022 the place now caters for locals and visitors in search of a bite of food and some refreshments
THE MENU

The main menu at the VOT features a whole host of small plates and tapas, some traditional, some more akin with what people just fancy ‘picking’ at while they sup their drinks and chat.
We ordered a selection of plates that probably should not be chosen together but picked purely as I fancied eating all of them, basically meatballs, chicken, potato, and roast pork, you know the sort of stuff I often scoff🧐😎
ALBONDIGAS RELLENAS DE MOZZERELLA

The first dish selected was never in doubt as we picked the ALBONDIGAS RELLENAS DE MOZZERELLA or meatballs with cheese if we want to make it simple for you.
Listed on the menu as ‘Juicy pork meatballs stuffed with mozzarella, baked in a rich tomato sauce and topped with Parmesan’ These were certainly a very tasty morsel!
Excellent meatballs, but you only get two so order another portion as it isn’t really much of a sharing dish and you may miss out if you blink and someone grabs the second one.
PATATAS BRAVAS

Next up we needed a side of some sort of potato so we played along with the theme and ordered the PATATAS BRAVAS
Described as ‘Crispy potatoes smothered in spicy bravas sauce and finished with creamy aioli’
This is always a classic tapas choice that I do love but sometimes think I should have just got chips
POLLO AL LIMON Y AL AJO

Next we ordered the POLLO AL LIMON Y AL AJO – reading that are you thinking chicken and lemon? Well if so that was not far off!,
The menu describes this dish as
‘Tender chicken thighs marinated in lemon, garlic, olive oil, Lebanese spices, roasted until golden and served with garlic yoghurt sauce’
This was a real ‘banger’ of a dish that I was loving, should have ordered some bread to mop up all the sauces, I wanted more! If I eat another meal here I will pick this dish
BOCADITOS DE PANCETTA

BOCADITOS DE PANCETTA was the last dish we picked basically because it mentioned pork belly.
‘Crispy pork belly bites tossed in sticky hoisin sauce, served hot with spring onions’
This was a very tasty dish, but didn’t quite fit in with the rest of the meal, perhaps one for some private nibbling as a snack

There was lots more on the menu to choose from but we had eaten plenty enough to keep us going.
In hindsight we probably should have had the mussels off the specials as it was that chalkboard that drew us in to eat in the first place.
On this occasion we went full in on the tapas selection but I guess you can just be more simple like the man at the next table who just ordered the Fish Goujons with some chips

The week we visited Plymouth the VOT was rammed with people enjoying the July sunshine, the beer and the food. It was one of the more popular places in the area
I would say I’ll be back but I already have we came the next night when I took this picture of my beer in the garden area 🤪 and it is on my list for when we are back in Plymouth
I always enjoy a pint of craft beer and the Camden Town IPA goes down well especially in a fancy branded glass
HISTORY of the V.O.T

Inside the menu there is a nice short history of the place which I will leave here if you fancy a read. There is more detail on the bar and cafe on their website
