Cochon Butcher – Brisket Sliders and Mac n Cheese….awesome

Cochon Butcher New Orleans

Cochon Butcher on Tchoupitoulas Street is right next door to the acclaimed Cochon in the Warehouse District. I felt the need to make a special trip to find it while we were visiting New Orleans. I didn’t quite have the cash float to pay for a meal at Cochon so I was hoping to get just a little bit of that Southern Flavour and a drop of Cajun magic at this little butcher type deli store to be able to satisfy my desires.

Cochon meat counter

Described as ‘a tribute to Old World butcher and charcuterie shops’, Cochon Butcher is made up of a meat counter, filled with a lot of lovely looking bits and pieces of charcuterie, and a deli counter where you can order from a bar menu full of small plates, sides and sandwiches.

The place was pretty full when we visited but there was just a little space free at the front on one of their counters with a bar stool. So we grabbed a stool and pondered the menu realising pretty quickly that there was not going to be enough time on the visit to eat enough of the good stuff.

Now that some time has passed and I have looked at a few tales online of other peoples visits here I kind of wished that I had gone with my first instinct and ordered the ‘Le Pig Mac’ which is described as ‘2 all Pork Patties, Special Sauce, Lettuce, Cheese, Pickle + Onion on Sesame Seed Bun’ for $10.

Then again I could also easily have munched down on the ‘Duck Pastrimi Sliders’ or the ‘Pimento Cheese Slider’, the ‘Hot Boudin’ or the ‘Charcuterie plate’ all for $6.

So basically I think I am saying that I wanted to eat everything off the small plate menu!

So what did I eat?

Brisket Sliders

I ended up ordering a pair of their Brisket sliders which were as expected kind of amazing. The menu just described them simply as a ‘sweet and spicy brisket slider’ and I suppose in essence that was what they were. Having said that if there was ever a case of the ‘sum being greater than the parts’ well then this simple sandwich epitomised that sentiment.

A lightly toasted bun filled with ‘Melt in the Mouth’ chunks of brisket smothered in a sweet and tangy bbq style sauce is only surpassed by the fact that there are two of these beauties on the plate!

Mac and Cheese at Cochin Butcher

To accompany my sliders I just had to have a side of their Mac and Cheese. This arrived at the counter still bubbling with steam coming up from the sauce. It was touch and go as to whether I would be able to wait long enough to allow it to cool below lava molten temperature before I could resist taking a mouthful.

I may have jumped the gun and dived in before it cooled, but I had to, my mouth could wait no longer, and it was worth the burn marks.

The dish is filled with soft pasta and thick creamy cheese sauces all topped with a crunchy and toasted layer of bread crumbs. The sauce is rich and decadent and very, very Moorish! This isn’t a dish for the waistline, but then again having said that, if you are reading this you probably are not that bothered about such things as a calorie.

Cochon Butchers is located at 930 Tchoupitoulas Street in the Warehouse District of New Orleans, LA 70130. It is about a 10 minute walk from the quarter if that is where you are based. You can check them out on Facebook and on Twitter

When I went in there were so many things that I wanted to try off the menu, but just not enough time or space im my stomach to do the place justice. I will have to come back. Just a little taster of the sort of things that they offer can be seen on the menu I photographed below.
