Al’s Burger Shack in Chapel Hill has been one of my best moments on this MyFoodHunt trip in the Carolinas. I think that this is the best burger I have chomped on for quite some time, and I seem to eat quite a lot of them. Pretty much everyone I asked about getting a good burger said that I really had to head over to try them out. So I did! I did not realise just how good it was going to be
After I had visited I starting searching for lists of the best burgers in North Carolina and Al’s Burger Shack seems to keep on finding itself on those lists. OnlyInYourState had them in their top 1o burgers in North Carolina list back in 2015. The Straight Beef listed Al’s Burger Shack in its top 5 burgers of all time and they seem to be local burger experts with their popular podcast series
The Sean Bacon Cheddar Burger
My favourite type of burger is a cheeseburger and if I can get my hands on one topped with a bit of bacon, well then I am doubly happy. It was with great delight then that I was able to find this combo at Al’s Burger Shack in the guise of their Sean Bacon Cheddar Burger.
This is as you might guess, a burger topped with bacon and cheddar, plus the classic toppings of lettuce, tomato, and some mayo. The burger itself, NC pasture raised, was thick and juicy, cooked just nicely so that it was still pink in the centre. The cheese was melted well so that it coated all of the meat surface, I like that, and the crispy bacon was there in number so that you get a bite of burger, bacon, and cheese with each mouthful.
Sometime I find the salad items to be sad affairs, but the shredded lettuce and sliced tomato that I found here in between my bun slices was really nice and fresh so I enjoyed eating them. I loved the bun too, soft to bite with a perfect light toasting on the inside of each half bun.
I really enjoyed eating at Al’s Burger Shack and I honestly think that this was one of the best burgers that I have found to eat in the area. They also have plenty of other options on their menu to try out. If I was in town for a longer stretch I would work my way through as many as I could get my hands out. Check out their offerings here
