Breakfast at Harolds D-Day Cafe

Harold’s D-Day Cafe next to the Anglia Motel in Spalding is located on the A17 near Fleet Hargate by Holbeach on the south side of the road heading away from the coast.

We had originally intended stopping for breakfast at Billys Cafe on the other side of the road, but sadly when we pulled in the place was boarded up and seems to have closed down.

Today though instead we had to make a U-turn across the road into Harolds. We had stopped once before and had been disapointed with our fare so it was with some trepidation and reluctance that we crossed the threshold into the cafe. Spoiler alert it was to be a much more favourable experience this time around, whoot whoot!

BREAKFAST MENU BOARD AT HAROLD’S

It was still fairly early, pre-lunch anyway, so I was in dire need of some sort of breakfast situation to keep me fuelled up for the rest of the journey up to Wells next the sea.

My eyes were firmly fixed on the menu board behind the counter searching for what I needed, no surprise that they did, noting and selecting the ALL DAY of “Bacon, Egg, Beans, Sausage, Tomato, Fried Slice, Mushrooms, Hashbrown and Bread & Butter” for £8.95

ALL DAY BREAKFAST

Portion wise you could not grumble much about this breakfast plate, ok so presentation wise it would not win over the purists or the breakfast police, but this plateful was not for them it was for me so I don’t really care what they think 🤣🤣

The bacon was thick and meaty, the sausage was almost the star of the show, big fat, crispy skin and solid well tasting filling. I was expecting catering level at best so was pleasantly surprised to get a more decent snorker

I really enjoyed my fried slice and the egg perched on top was already in just the right place so that I could eat it with the runny yolk. It wasn’t the most golden or even yellow yolk I have ever had but it did the job

Apparently the hash brown is not supposed to be on an English breakfast but this was an ALL DAY breakfast and when it is called that I think anything goes even chips but I didn’t actually say that lol

The mushrooms were perhaps a bit overdone and fried but once mixed with everything else I didn’t mind too much

The beans and tinned tomato just melded together in a big juicy mess so it was lucky there was so much bread available to mop it all up with. I would probably decline the tinned toms if I came again and perhaps would just build my own breakfast instead of having the set meal.

BREAKFAST ROLL

If you didn’t want or need a full breakfast feast you could make it a little lighter of a bite by ordering a breakfast cob (or bap as they call it around here) or you could complicate things even more in the world of bread by asking for the breakfast roll (which we did)

The BREAKFAST ROLL was filled with sausage, bacon, egg, and mushroom and was priced up at £6.45 (for the record the roll was a bap )

It wasn’t a bad effort at all, a slice of thick meaty bacon, a nice herby thick sausage, fried egg and fried mushrooms, all cooked well and all very tasty and satisfying. Special mention for the nice fresh bread roll too.

If you were not in the mood for breakfast or eating later in the day you could order all the cafe classics such as Cottage Pie, Ham Egg and Chips, Lasagne and multiple different curries

They had a great sounding selection of traditional puddings as well including Sticky Toffee sponge, Spotted Dick and Apple Pie

I think that they have got their crowd worked out and serve up dishes and food to please the market. I was happy to find that it was a much better meal than last time we stopped and I was glad that we gave them a second chance!

Officially located at A17 Washaway Road, Fleet Hargate, PE12 8LT you can check out the cafe, motel and parking situation on their website.
