The Station Tavern in Cambridge was pretty much the only place near our hotel staying open late enough to get a drink in the evening. Serving drinks until 11pm and food until 9.30pm we stopped off here most nights to grab a bite and a drink

The StationTavern does offer a whole host of decent sounding mains including a Black Face Lamb Rump, Grilled Pork Chop, alongside a fancy sounding British Short Rib & Brisket Burger and and even fancier sounding Fish and Chip dish ‘Aspall’s Cyder Battered Haddock’

We were just in the market for some snack level food so picked from the starter/small plates section getting a side of parmesan fries, a plate of Crispy Pork Belly Bites, and a plate of Buttermilk chicken

It wasn’t grand or particularly life changing and it wasn’t supposed to be, it was just a couple of decent plates of scoffage washed down with a couple of cold beers.

The pork belly bites has a decent crackling skin along with some juicy and fatty chunks of pork. They came with a drizzle of hot honey sauce, I could have liked more

The buttermilk chicken was well fried, crunchy coating around some moist meaty breast. The spiced gravy that accompanied the chicken worked equally well with the pork belly bites and the fries

Located at 2 Station Square, Cambridge, CB1 2GA the Station Tavern seemed equally appointed to look after both the people waiting for their onward connections and those of us staying at the IBIS Hotel Next Door

This was a spot that we were most grateful to find next to the hotel and looking back I wish I had tried some of their main dishes which seemed to be quite popular with the passing trade
