Friedman’s at Chelsea Market is one of several locations that they run around the city, but this one at the market is the original that opened in 2009.
Apparently Friedman’s was named after the famous economist Milton Friedman who popularized the phrase, “there ain’t no such thing as a free lunch” That is a mantra that I use all the time and one of the first lessons that I was taught at College. So it tickled me when I read that on their website
The sign says that they are open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner 7 days a week. We were down in the Market just as Brunch was ending so we were stuck in that ‘is it lunch? or dinner?’ mode and not sure what to eat. That is pretty much the time of day that my belly says ‘just give me a burger’ and that usually works out pretty well

The Beer & Burger Special at Friedmans was looking to be the best value around the place. We had fancied a burger and when we worked out that if we ordered a burger with fries and a beer at other places nearby it was going to be nearer $25, well then it seemed stupid not to get a burger and a beer for $19 from Friedmans
Friedmans Burger

The friedmans burger is a classic all natural angus beef served with herb fries, and pickle on a brioche bun. They provide a stack of lettuce, tomato, and red onion so that you can ‘dress’ your own burger sandwich as you like it.
I shoved a few leaves of lettuce and a slice of tomato into mine and left it plain and simple. I find that the red raw onion sometimes just is too powerful and gets in the way of my enjoyment.
As burgers go I like this, a nice well formed patty of meat, cooked medium so that it was juicy in the middle and with a nice crust on the outside. It is pretty meaty and fairly thick so you did need to wash it down with a beer.
The fries didn’t look that good on the plate, they looked a bit greasy but they tasted pretty good, I liked the herbiness, and anyway I was hungry so I scoffed the lot.
I found this to be a really good classic burger at a decent price and the beer was pretty good too 🙂 I would come back here again for a meal if I was down this way at the Market
